Glossary
Retrofit Plan: Offers various retrofit scenarios consisting of different paths you can take to make your home more energy efficient. The report provides a long-term plan aimed at achieving a zero-carbon performance, usually in stages, depending on individual needs and budget limitations. It also reveals the potential impact of each scenario on both the home’s carbon footprint and energy bills, as well as estimations for installation costs.
Air-Tightness Testing: Involves identifying and measuring areas where air is escaping through gaps and building materials in a structure. The assessment is conducted by measuring how much air is leaking in or out of a building when the pressure inside the building is deliberately changed. This evaluation is crucial for identifying heat loss caused by air drafts. When combined with thermal imaging, it can effectively pinpoint cold spots and drafts.
Thermal Imaging Survey: Thermal imaging cameras offer non-contact temperature detection for a range of subjects, from people to objects and liquids. Their versatility is extremely helpful in finding different problems in buildings, such as issues with wires, leaks, and electrical faults. They require a notable temperature difference for accurate readings, so they are most effective in colder seasons. Assessments should be done in the morning to avoid image distortions caused by direct sunlight.
Heat Loss Analysis: A comprehensive assessment aimed at identifying and quantifying heat energy loss from a building. The findings from this analysis help homeowners decide how to strategically implement new energy-efficient measures.
Renewable Energy Assessments: An evaluation conducted for renewable energy systems, such as heat pump technologies, solar panels, and solar thermal systems. These assessments analyse the feasibility, energy efficiency, and potential environmental impact of integrating renewable energy solutions into homes. They aim to guide homeowners in making informed decisions about adopting eco-friendly upgrades to enhance their homes while contributing to a more sustainable future.
Energy Efficiency Measures (EEM): Retrofit measures which can be applied to your home to improve its energy efficiency e.g., external wall insulation, roof insulation, windows and doors.
Heat Loss Calculations: Identifies where a house is losing heat because of uninsulated walls, ceilings, or floors, and where warm air is escaping through ventilation systems.
Thermal Bridges: Also known as cold bridges, these are parts of a building that allow much more heat to escape compared to the surrounding materials. This often happens because of areas that lack insulation and is usually where condensation forms.
Condensation: Condensation is the process in which a gas or vapour turns into a liquid because it gets cooler. This often happens when it touches a cold surface. A condensation report identifies where this is happening in your house and recommends effective ways to fix it.
Renewable Energy Measures: These are types of energy sources like solar panels, wind turbines, or hydroelectric power that can create electricity and heat for houses. They help us use less of the energy sources that won't last forever (like oil and gas), save on energy bills, and help us take better care of the environment. An evaluation that looks at renewable energy measures can determine whether these systems are a good fit for your home.
